On June 9, 2012 the San Diego Police Department conducted a DUI checkpoint in the 1400 block of G Street in the East Village. The checkpoint was made possible by the “DUI Awareness and Enforcement Grant” from the Office of Traffic Safety.

The checkpoint was operational from 2205 to 0248 hours. 2463 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. 1315 of those drivers were screened by officers. 30 of those drivers were detained for a further evaluation of their sobriety. 16 arrests were made for DUI in or near the checkpoint, and 16 vehicle impounds were conducted. One citation was also issued for an open alcohol container in a vehicle.

Funding for this DUI operation was provided to the San Diego Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, targeting those who still don’t heed the message to designate a sober driver. Citizens are encouraged to report Drunk Drivers by – Calling 9-1-1!
