The Broadway musical Peter Pan comes to San Diego Nov. 13 for a five day run. Alongside Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan, Broadway veteran Brent Barrett plays the role of Capt. Hook. Mission Valley News spoke with Barrett in New York City while the show was on a hiatus. Barrett’s prior roles include Chicago, Annie Get Your Gun (opposite Reba McEntire), and a stint in the Las Vegas production of Phantom of the Opera at The Venetian. Barrett said preparation for the role came easy because he’d seen an original production as a kid and is very familiar with the role. Of course, the public notion of a pirate has changed considerably since then. “Jonny Depp’s role in Pirates of the Caribbean is the only reference of a pirate that a lot of young kids have today, said Barrett. “ Recently I was in La Mirada after a show out of costume and a young kid asked me if I had played the role of Capt. Jack Sparrow!”
Barrett was nominated for an Olivier Award for his role in Kiss Me Kate and has appeared as a soloist in many prestigious symphonies around the world. Barrett says working with Cathy Rigby comes naturally because they starred together in an earlier version of Kiss Me Kate. “Having worked together in the past makes things so much easier”, says Barrett. “As for the preparation, you do your research, but in the end you just pretend; just like you did when you were a kid!”
Peter Pan runs through Nov. 18 at the San Diego Civic Theatre.
