San Diego city officials have released a demonstration video of the city's expansive water purification project - signaling a vast need to address the city's limited water sources and reduce its reliance on outside sources.
The video, a little more than 5 minutes long, gives viewers a peak into the city's efforts of developing and providing safe and reliable water to residents through the usage of advanced water purification technology.
Narrated by Marsi Steirer, director of the Water Purification project, the video, released on YouTube, provides a tour of the Advanced Water Purification Facility as well as specific information, illustrations and diagrams of the processes and steps involved in the purification efforts.
Officials say the goal of the demonstration project is to determine the "feasibility of a full-scale reservoir augmentation project, which would diversify San Diego's water supply, reduce its dependence on imported water and provide a safe source of drinking water for residents."
If the project is a success and "deemed technically feasible" by an independent advisory panel of experts - pending mayoral and City Council authorization - a full-scale reservoir augmentation project would be implemented.
About 1 million gallons of water per day are purified at the facility using membrane filtration, reverse osmosis and UV light/advanced oxidation.
Officials say the Demonstration Project will conclude in early 2013.
